JASON WILSON AND THE SOLDIERS OF SONG
In support of his book Soldiers of Song (Wilfrid Laurier University Press, 2012), award-winning historian/author and two-time Juno Award nominee Dr. Jason Wilson has written a short, entertaining show that celebrates Canada's famous First World War Concert Party: The Dumbells. Wilson, joined by his own "era-appropriate" band, presents a review and re-imagination of the musical fare performed by the famous comedy troupe (and indeed by other concert parties of that same war).
Among the pioneers of sketch comedy, The Dumbells are as important to the history of Canadian theatre as they are to the cultural history of early twentieth century Canada. The seeds of black humour that inspired the likes of 'Wayne and Shuster' and 'Monty Python' were sown in the trenches of the First World War and Canada's concert parties - entertainment groups made up of actual fighting soldiers - were central to this process.
If Canadian nationhood was won on the crest of Vimy Ridge, it was The Dumbells who provided the country with its earliest soundtrack. Yet, their popularity was not limited to troops housed along the trenches. The Canadian soldier-entertainers also managed a run in London's West End and became the first ever Canadian production to score a hit on Broadway. Touring the nation for some twelve years after the war, The Dumbells became a household name in Canada and their legacy remains intact with those who boast some connection to that Great War. This half-lecture/half-musical performance transports the listener back to a time when Canada's fighting men whistled 'The Dumbell Rag' along the Western Front.
