What is Urban Design?
Urban Design is about balancing all of the elements like architecture, urban planning, landscape architecture, engineering and other disciplines to create a community that reflects the people and the history of the area. Think about some of the places you have visited in the past and what made it memorable? All those elements are part of Urban Design.
Why are Urban Design Guidelines important?
Urban Design Guidelines are an important tool that can be used to provide clear direction for how land should be developed. This can be through diagrams, examples from different communities and best practices in order to achieve a level of design quality for all elements of the physical elements like streetscape and open spaces.
For example, if your new neighbour decides to rebuild their home, these Urban Design Guidelines will provide guidance on good design objectives and what elements should be considered into the building and site to make sure it fits the neighbourhood character (i.e building side to lot ratio).
Please note that urban design guidelines are not policy. They are meant to build on existing Zoning By-law regulations and the Official Plan to address appropriate heights, setbacks and separation, building massing and building articulation.
We want to know what features are the most important to you. Help guide the design for future development in Newmarket by attending this PIC and sharing your feedback!
