Halloween is just around the corner! Safety Cone Sam and Belle the Bike have some tips to help you stay safe while you’re out having a spooktacular time. If you plan to trick-or-treat or travel on Halloween, Sam and Belle remind residents to keep the following tips in mind.
- Drive with caution and slow down when driving on Halloween.
- Pay attention to children who may cross the road without looking.
- Slow down on residential streets - remember the speed limit is a maximum, you don't have to drive to the limit.
- Drive slow when large crowds are present.
Tips for trick-or-treating:
- Avoid trick-or-treating alone. Walk with a group or a trusted adult on Halloween and organize a meeting spot in case anyone gets lost.
- Use caution when crossing the street and remember to use designated crosswalks when possible.
- When going from house to house, work your way up one side of the street, cross at a crosswalk and then walk on the other side of the street. Don’t crisscross back and forth across the street.
- Wear costumes and clothing that are reflective or bright in colour. Consider wearing reflective tape or bringing a flashlight. This will increase your visibility to motorists at night.
- Consider wearing face paint rather than a mask as they can obstruct your view.
- Homeowners are encouraged to clear sidewalks of leaves, extension cords or any other items that could obstruct pathways for trick-or-treaters.
- Before your children start eating the candy, double check their candy for any open or tampered wrappers.
- Have an emergency plan.
- Review with children how to call 9-1-1 and what to do in case they become lost or need help when trick-or-treating.
