Celebrate International Women’s Day in Newmarket
Created: Friday, March 01, 2024
International Women’s Day is coming up on Friday, March 8. With well over a century of history and change, the first International Women's Day (IWD) was held in March 1911. IWD is a day of collective global activism and celebration that belongs to all those committed to forging women's equality.
The Town of Newmarket isdedicated to making the Town a diverse, welcoming and inclusive community for all.
In spirit of this year’s IWD theme - Inspire Inclusion – here are ways EVERYONE can learn, grow, and celebrate International Women’s Day locally:
- Central York Fire Services (CYFS) third annual INSPIRE event: In collaboration with many community groups such as York Regional Police (YRP), York Paramedics and more. This drop-in event is an opportunity to inspire the next generation of first responders to consider a career in the field. You can drop into Station 4-5 (300 Earl Stewart Dr., Aurora) on Saturday, March 2 from 10 am. to 2 p.m. For a sneak peek, check out Central York Fire’s Facebook page for videos from first responders who will be at the event.
- Free films at the Newmarket Library: On Friday, March 8, stop by the Newmarket Library’s multipurpose room for a day of films that highlight accomplishments of a diverse group of women.
Movies include:
- 10 a.m. - Hidden Figure (2016, PG) - the inspiring story of three brilliant African-American women working at NASA in the 1960s and the role played in the success of the space program.
- 12:30 p.m. - Selena (1997, PG) - Jennifer Lopez stars as Hispanic pop star Selena, who rose to fame and was cut short by her tragic death.
- 3 p.m. - The Iron Lady (2011, PG-13) - Meryl Streep shares her Oscar winning performance as British Prime Minister Thatcher in this biographical drama.
There are also many great events hosted by groups across the community. Together, let’s continue to make Newmarket a strong, healthy and equitable community.
