Mayor John Taylor's Profile

John was born and raised in Newmarket. He attended Maple Leaf Public School and Newmarket High School. John subsequently attended Trent University, The University of Toronto, and The University of British Columbia.  John earned bachelor degrees in English and Education, a Master's degree in Canadian Studies, and a Ph.D. in Education. John has also conducted educational research in Thailand, Manitoba, and British Columbia.  He taught a course at U.B.C. related to Educational Policy.  Part of his work was published as a chapter for a book titled, "First Nations Education in Canada: The Circle Unfolds."  John received an award for academic achievement while at U.B.C.

John was co-owner of a logistics company employing over 30 people.  He also was a teacher and worked at Queens Park.

John was first elected to the Town of Newmarket Council in 2006 as Regional Councillor and Deputy Mayor and remained in that role until 2018 when he ran for office as Mayor of Newmarket.  As Mayor for the Town of Newmarket,  he represents the Town on both Town Council and York Region Council. John currently sits on the York Region Rapid Transit Corp (YRRTC) and on the Human Services Planning Board (HSPB) of York Region and was the co-chair of HSPB from 2010 - 2018. John sits as chair of Housing York Inc., the seventh largest social housing provider in Ontario. He also sits on the Board of Directors for Newmarket Tay Power Distribution.
